About 35 years ago, a small group of South Africans of Indian descent, decided to form an organization to cater to our cultural and spiritual needs. Thus came into being the Nirvana Cultural Society (NCS).
Their roots stemmed from south India as indentured Indians to South Africa. They brought their knowledge of the Ramayana, the Mahabharata, the Thevaram and the Thiruvasagam, (the great Hindu epics). They came to a new continent well versed with some of the greatest religious philosophy in all mankind. The sons and daughters of these early pioneers became pioneers themselves when they immigrated to the New World. Filled with a vast array of human, cultural, social and religious experiences from their ancestors. Hinduism was planted into the fertile soil of Toronto and its environs.
We are happy to report that the nucleus of the society has remained intact and has never veered from its original purpose. Love and compassion to those in need, has remained high on its agenda. “Dharma”, “Service to Humanity is Service to God” a cornerstone of the Hindu faith has been championed many times over in the 35 year plus, of the society’s existence. With matching federal funds, the Stephen Lewis Foundation was the recipient of $50,000 to fight HIV Aids in Africa. Other similar causes – The fight against cancer (Princess Margaret Hospital), aid to the earthquake victims in Pakistan, a helping hand to the unfortunate in Bhopal, organ transplant research in Toronto, Mandela Children’s Fund, our donations to alleviate the suffering of battered women, are some who have benefited from the efforts of the society and its members.
It must be mentioned that our successors in all these ventures, have been immensely aided by an ever-willing core of supporters and well wishers.
We have been commended for the work we have done and for planning other ventures of a similar nature. However, we and all those in need would welcome assistance in making our society an even stronger one.
Our annual Diwali Ball has been our fundraiser. This celebration of the festival of lights has been well received for over three decades.
Not only have we succeeded in bringing family and friends together, but also, have facilitated in highlighting the principle tenets of the Ramayana of love, in its multitude of facets and the ultimate conquest of darkness by the power of light. (Knowledge over Ignorance).
The members of the society do meet regularly on the second Sunday of every month, to conduct a Hindu prayer service. Services such as Sivaratri, Ramnavmi, and Krishnajayanthi are regularly featured and well attended by members, friends and well wishers.
“Laborare Est Orare” is in concert with Dharma. This has always been a feature of the society. We have embraced it strongly for over three decades. It is expected that the next decades will bring new challenges, new hopes, and new successes. The nucleus or core group has met its call from all those who support good will, kindness, compassion and an unselfish helping hand whenever needed.
We always remember, “Service to Humanity is Service to God”
There’s still much good work to be done. The challenge is ours.
EVERY ONE OF US
